Every artist hoping to learn Procreate likes a quick and easy tutorial AND drawing something that’s cute and trendy. Today I’m going to show you how to draw a citrus fruit slice, specifically an orange. Along the way you’re going to learn all kinds of inside tips and tricks and fun tools Procreate offers. So let’s go!
Step 1: Draw a circle
Draw a circle. That’s pretty easy isn’t it? But how do we get that circle to be perfect? What you’re going to want to do is draw a freehanded “circle” but before lifting your pencil off of the screen, take your other hand and use one finger to press onto the screen. VOILA! Did you notice your “circle” becoming a perfect circle? Without lifting your finger, lift the pencil and now you can lift your finger.
To make sure the circle is perfectly in the middle of your canvas, select it and turn on “snapping” in the bottom left of procreate. This will allow you to “snap” the circle to the middle of your canvas. You can then turn snapping off because otherwise it will interfere with the rest of our fun.
Step 2: Duplicate the circle
Duplicate your circle and make it slightly smaller than the original one. You can also turn the opacity down to help with our next step.
Step 3: Turn on drawing guide
Now we’ll turn on your drawing guide by clicking on the wrench in the upper left corner and toggling “drawing guide” to on. Next, right below this toggle, we’ll want to click on “Edit Drawing Guide”.
Step 4: Select radial guide
You’ll see a menu open on the bottom of your screen. Click on “Options” allllll the way over on the right. Once that menu pops up, choose “Radial”.
Step 5: Draw wedges
This part is important. Create a new layer and make sure that your drawing assist is on. Next, look at your canvas and you’ll notice that your drawing guide has created some nice looking “wedges” already. So nice of it! You’ll want to use this to draw a wedge in that space. The best part, you only need to draw it once and since your drawing assist is on it will do the rest of the work for you.
Step 6: Extend inside circle
Now, take your lowered opacity inside circle layer and extend it out past your wedges just a little. Here we’re creating the white rind portion of the orange. If you lowered your opacity on this layer, you can now move it back to 100%.
Step 7: Draw seeds
You’re so close! I love to include some seeds in the drawing just to make it a little more interesting. You can keep the drawing assist on if you’d like for this part, or draw it freehanded. If you’re using drawing assist, I like to turn this off afterwards and erase a few here and there and draw some new ones so that every wedge doesn’t look identical.
Step 8: Colorize & add texture
If you want to keep going, you can now colorize your orange slice. I like to add texture and details in too occasionally. It adds just a little more interest but feel free to add your own personal touch. There you have it! I knew you could do it and I would LOVE to see your creations.
